An already difficult summer just got more problematic for 49ers rookie kicker Jake Moody.
The team announced that Moody suffered a right quadriceps strain during practice this week and will not be available to kick in the 49ers’ preseason game Friday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez will take over kicking duties for the pre-season finals at Levi’s Stadium.
Mody is listed as day by day with infection. The 49ers open the regular season on Sunday, September 10 at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Moody has faced a lot of scrutiny since the 49ers selected Michigan product in the third round (99th overall) to replace veteran Robbie Gould, the most accurate player in franchise history.
Moody looked shaky in the 49ers’ first two preseason games. He made three of his five field goal attempts and missed one of his two extra points.
He delivered the game-winning kick in the final game of the 49ers’ 21-20 victory over the Denver Broncos last week, but his 32-yard attempt barely made it to the right post.
“It wasn’t a great hit,” Moody said after the match. “I wouldn’t say any of them were that clean, honestly. Last time it was that close to getting a clean ball. It’s just a learning curve. I want to make the practices translate onto the field.”
