Although the overall design of the 10T is similar to that of the OnePlus 10 Pro, there is no wake/mute slider this time around, nor is there any sign of the Hasselblad-branded camera system found on the latest OnePlus models.
The alert slider has been a staple on OnePlus flagship phones for years, providing a quick and easy way to put their phones on silent and vibrate modes without having to tap any on-screen menus. In an email interview with the edge, OnePlus chief designer Hope Liu said getting rid of the slider was necessary to have enough internal space for other components needed for “high wattage charging, large battery capacity, and a better antenna signal.”
For example, to offer the kinds of fast charging speeds OnePlus is targeting with the 10T (it hasn’t officially announced the specifications yet, but Leaks indicate that the OnePlus 10R’s 150W fast charging could make an appearance), Liu says OnePlus should include “two charging pumps” inside the 10T, compared to just one pump for the 80W fast charging-compatible OnePlus 10 Pro. The company has also prioritized the antenna system that includes 15 separate antennas inside the OnePlus 10T, which it says improves the signal when holding the phone horizontally — a feature when playing online games.
“While the alert slider appears to be a very small component, in reality it has a relatively large impact on the device’s motherboard area – taking up 30mm² of space,” says Liu. “To ensure OnePlus 10T was delivered in the areas we know our users would appreciate the most… while keeping the alert slider, we had to stack the device’s motherboard, making the device thicker.” Removing the slider was the compromise OnePlus decided to make.
Another difference compared to the 10 Pro is the lack of a Hasselblad-branded camera system – though, given its minimal impact on other OnePlus phones, we’re not too concerned about the omission here. But Liu confirms that the 10T’s main camera will use a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor (which is technically a higher resolution than the 10 Pro’s 48MP main camera) and will support 10-bit color shooting, as well as OnePlus’ “enhanced HDR photography” and OnePlus night mode.
Other features that Liu would like to confirm include the 6.7-inch screen for the 10T. Resolution and refresh rate haven’t been announced yet, but from the images, it looks like this is a flat screen rather than a curved screen around the edges of the device.
