Coach Ron Rivera Announced that the team launched Defense line coach Sam Mills on Tuesday, just over a month before the start of the 2022 season.
Mills was entering his eighteenth season in the NFL and his third with Washington after coming with Rivera from the United States Carolina Panthers In 2020. He is a former son New Orleans Saints and Panthers line player Sam Mills, who was posthumously elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022 after his death in 2005.
Rivera added that relieving Mills was “very difficult” due to his relationship with his family.
“I have known Sam for a long time and he is a very good football coach and I appreciate everything he has done,” Rivera said on Tuesday. “He helped us win a league title in our first year, and things were tough last year. But there are some things I felt I wanted to change.”

A big week for the NFL teams
