About 120 people were detained in Makhachkala during Sunday’s protest against Russia’s ongoing mobilization for war with Ukraine; Radio Svoboda reported on Monday that ten criminal cases had been opened. However, the protest continued on Monday.
Radio Svoboda (Radio Free Europe / Radio Svoboda’s Russian editorial) announced that 46 reports of administrative offenses had been drawn up against the protesters. Eight criminal cases have been initiated in connection with violence against a police officer, and two more – calls for extremism.

A significant portion of the soldiers sent to fight against Ukraine in the first weeks of the Russian invasion came from this region and other peripheral republics of the Russian Federation with non-Slavic populations. Independent media pointed out that the majority of Russian soldiers killed in the war were from Dagestan.
