Police said five people were killed in a shooting at an apartment complex in suburban Toronto on Sunday night.
At around 7:20 p.m., officers responded to a call of active shooting at the building in Vaughan, a city north of Toronto, York Regional Police Chief Jim McSween said at a news conference.
McSween said the police found “a horrific scene in which many victims perished.” He said the victim, who was hit by a bullet, was taken to a hospital where she is expected to survive.
The Emergency Response Unit is clearing the building so that the displaced can return to their homes.
“What we are trying to do is make sure that the residents who live … in this building are able to return as quickly as possible. That will take some time,” McSween said, referring to the size of the building.
He said the police are still notifying the families of the victims, so their identities have not been made public.
The suspect’s motives have not been released and police have not disclosed what led to the shooting.
Policewoman Laura Nicholl told CNN The incident was “the most horrible call I’ve ever seen in my entire career.”
Nicol said in a previous press conference that it appeared that the victims were from more than one apartment unit.
