They wanted Banks, a 6-foot-1, 197-pound cornerback enough to move one place up.

where it fits

Banks is a physical cornerback and press man with decent size, athleticism, and height. He profiled the kind of player Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale needed to help him through the secondary.

In his prospective Banks profile, BBV’s Chris Pflum said:

Maryland cornerback Duent Banks has an amazing combination of athleticism, physicality, and versatility to play position at the NFL level.

Banks is an outside cornerback in the Maryland chart and has enough size and plenty of athleticism to stay the outside in the NFL. He has experience on both left and right sides, in press coverage, outside man, and area coverage.

Banks is a competitive and turbulent physical corner in press coverage. He uses his jam early in the knocks before dropping back into the back. Banks has a fast, smooth, compact backspin in man coverage, allowing him to get to the ground without having to turn his hips. Early in the road. Having said that, he has very fluid hips when it comes time to open or turn his hips. He is easily able to stay in phase with almost all receivers across their routes. He also has excellent long speed and is capable of carrying receivers down the field on vertical tracks.

Banks is also the filly’s area coverage corner. He’s an active communicator before and after the shot, and does a good job of catching and passing receivers as they pass through his coverage areas. He doesn’t stick to receivers when they’re not back from his charge, and he doesn’t find himself just covering the turf. Banks also shows a rate Good football intelligence in diagnosing trajectory concepts and understanding coverage rules, he is able to transition seamlessly from area coverage to man coverage when the play calls for.

“He’s also a defender willing to run on the perimeter. He watches the backcourt when in coverage and has a quick trigger for a second-level downhill. Likewise, Banks is physical against blockers when a play comes his way.”

What others say

ESPN:

Post-draft analysis

The Giants need to add talent and depth in the cornerback to match the talented receivers they see in the NFC East. Adoree Jackson has missed seven games, had no interceptions, and has the fifth-highest cornerback hit of the year. In addition, four players had as many interceptions as the Giants (six) last year. Banks is not a playmaker, but he has the tools to evolve into one. – munch

Expected impact for the first year: High impact start on day one. The Giants’ top needs are an outside cornerback, and Banks is just that with a size of 6-foot-2 and a dash speed of 4.38 seconds 40 yards to the boundary. He’s physical on the line of scrimmage and has the confidence to be the team’s CB1. – Miller

SB Nation:

Banks looks like a Wink Martindale corner. Good height, tall, very athletic and confident in his press ability. He’ll get hit and miss at times but he’s a great fit in New York and can work alongside Adoree Jackson. He’ll need more practice with his patience, but he’s a great playmaker for this defence. Grade: B+

Team 33:

Banks is a physical corner with perfect size and top class sports equipment. He is a choppy player with speed but does not have good ball production. The Giants needed help on their defensive end and landed a good wink Martindale defense. Grade: B+
