How do you know when Lyme disease is “forming” in the body? Three warning signals on legs

  1. Lyme disease (also known as Lyme disease) is the most common tick-borne disease. It is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi

  2. For long periods of time, Lyme disease can be asymptomatic and can “mimic” other diseases — which is why it’s sometimes called the “great imitator.”

  3. The disease affects the ankles, feet, and heels, and is not always accompanied by the typical symptoms of Lyme disease

Lyme disease can “mimic” other diseases

Lyme disease (also known as Lyme disease or tick spirochete) is the most common tick-borne disease. It is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. It is not without reason that they are called one of the most intelligent bacteria – they are very mobile, they can change shape, and in unfavorable conditions they can wait for months to change the situation. These are just some of the possibilities of Borrelia spirochetes.

Lyme disease is a mystery disease. It can be asymptomatic for a long time, and it can “fake” other diseases – which is why it is sometimes called the “great imitator”. Lyme disease can take the form of gout, myocarditis (rarely), neuroborreliosis (including encephalitis, meningitis). Neurological complications of the disease may include, among others: memory and concentration, facial nerve palsy, hallucinations and emotional disturbances.

Not everyone knows that Lyme disease can also affect the feet, ankles, heels, and toes (and not always with the typical symptoms of Lyme disease). Advanced Foot and Ankle of Wisconsin, an American foot pain clinic, describes the symptoms that affect the feet when Lyme disease strikes.

Silent symptoms of Lyme disease: pain and swelling in the legs

As we read on the clinic’s website, Lyme disease can cause pain in the heel and arch of the foot (that is, its physiological arches – Ed.). It would be unbearable to walk in this situation. People with Lyme disease may experience burning sensations and intermittent leg pain.

As the experts at Advanced Foot and Ankle Clinic of Wisconsin explain, undiagnosed and untreated Lyme disease can progress to Lyme arthritis. Inflammation affects the joints that bear the most weight, including the feet.

Of course, these illnesses do not necessarily indicate Lyme disease (for example, they may be the result of an injury). Advanced Foot and Ankle Doctors of Wisconsin caution against self-diagnosis and self-medication. They remind you that “understanding the source of foot pain is the first step to alleviating it,” and that this task should be left to the professionals.

Silent symptoms of Lyme disease: ankle pain and swelling

When undiagnosed and untreated Lyme disease progresses to Lyme arthritis, the ankles can also be affected. There will be pain and swelling. Diseases are actually related to the ankle joint and its area (commonly speaking, this is what we call ankle pain).

Again, it’s good to remember that ankle pain and swelling are not specific symptoms of Lyme disease. Ankle diseases can have many causes, for example, degenerative changes.

Silent symptoms of Lyme disease: Numbness in the feet

Lyme disease can cause numbness and tingling in the legs. This occurs when the disease affects the peripheral nerves (that is, to simplify the nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord) and neuroborreliosis develops. One of its possible symptoms is neuropathy (when peripheral nerves are damaged).

As a result, there are emotional disturbances. There may be numbness and tingling in the legs, but there may also be problems with coordination of the legs or weakness of the leg muscles, for example.

The best way to avoid Lyme disease is proper prevention. While going to forest or hiking, remember to dress appropriately – long pants, long sleeve shirt, socks and full shoes, headgear. We should use special tick repellents, avoid tall grass, and carefully inspect the body after returning from a walk (including the scalp).
