Timmermans leaving Brussels for domestic politics?

The left-wing opposition – the Workers’ Party (PvdA) and the Greens (GreoenLinks) – are joining forces to announce a joint list ahead of early elections for the Dutch parliament. Media speculates that it will be chaired by European Commission Vice President Franz Timmermans.

Early elections in the Netherlands

The collapse of Prime Minister Marek Rutte’s government means snap elections for the Tweede Chambers, the lower house of parliament. They will probably be held at the end of October.

The early elections have already caused certain shifts in the Dutch political scene. On Sunday, the leaders of the left-wing opposition, PvdA’s Esther-Mirjam Sent and GroenLinks’ Katinka Eikelenboom, announced that the two groups would run on a joint list.

The decision will have to be ratified by members of both parties in a vote next week, but it will only be a formality.

Members of both parties have a strong desire to join forces

Eikelenboom said at a conference in The Hague. The two groups work closely together, and they form a joint club in the Erste Camera, the upper house of parliament.
