DENVER — Pete Crowe-Armstrong has the kind of elite defense and added speed that could make an impact in the postseason chase. The Cubs are putting that idea to the test as they make a final push for a spot in the October playoff.
The Cubs promoted Crow-Armstrong, the No. 12 prospect in MLB Pipeline, from Triple-A Iowa on Monday for Chicago’s road series against the Rockies. When he entered the visitors’ clubhouse at Coors Field, there was a series of enthusiastic hugs and handshakes as he made his way across the room.
“I feel like I just got my moment to catch my breath,” said Crow Armstrong, who was sitting in the dugout before Monday’s game. “It was a little difficult to get into the club, but everyone was most welcoming. Yes, it was a beautiful sight when I walked in.”
The Cubs arrived at Coors Field three games behind the first-place Brewers in the National League Central. Chicago is also in second place in the NL Wild Card, sitting two games behind the Phillies and two games in front of the D-backs.
The Cubs optioned outfielder Alexander Canario to Triple-A Iowa and designated Anthony Kaye for assignment to open spots on the active and 40-man rosters, respectively, for Crow-Armstrong.
Cubs manager David Ross noted that Crow-Armstrong will have some “mixed” starts, adding that the center fielder could help give the spacious Coors Field outfield. Cornerback Jimmer Candelario was out of the lineup on Monday after leaving Sunday’s game with a strain on his back.
The arrival of Crow-Armstrong gives Ross some roster flexibility. If Candelario needs to rest a couple of games, Cody Bellinger would be an option at first base (along with Patrick Wisdom). Mike Tauchman is Chicago’s main alternative at center, but now Crowe Armstrong offers another option.
“He got the summons,” Ross said. “We have a group of people who got us here, but he can definitely help us.”
Even if Crow Armstrong is on the bench, he has an electric skill set that could make a difference. In center field, specifically, 21-year-old Crew Armstrong is not only one of the best defenders in the minor leagues, but probably in all of baseball.
“I don’t think that’s an exaggeration,” Jared Banner, the Cubs’ vice president of player development, said recently. “I think Pete is an excellent defensive player. I’m not sure exactly what grade I would give him, but he’s definitely an outstanding defender.
Pipeline gives him a grade of 80 for defense, due to his great speed (grade of 60), instincts, and drive to chase down baseballs in any direction. Last season, he earned a Minor League Gold Glove Award for his work in center field.
It was Banner who called Crow-Armstrong on Sunday with the news that he was headed to The Show.
“We think Pete is really mature and is a great competitor,” Banner said. “He comes in every day looking to work and get better. He’s shown the ability to adapt and respond to adversity when it comes. So, he’s in a really good spot.”
Crow-Armstrong was very happy to join the Cubs in the midst of a playoff push.
“It’s special, and it’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about almost all year,” he said. “I tried hard to stay present. But I think if you’re an assertive person, if you’re competitive, I think it’s hard not to think in situations like this.
The promotion also comes at a time when Crow-Armstrong — whom people around the Cubs, along with fans, often refer to as PCA — has been on a tear with Iowa. He crushed his second grand slam of the week on Sunday and has hit at a .311 clip with an .859 OPS in his past 10 games in Triple-A. In 34 games with the I-Cubs, PCA had 10 steals, 15 extra base hits, 22 RBI, 30 runs scored, and an .829 OPS.
Overall this season, Crow-Armstrong is hitting .283/.365/.511 in exactly 500 games between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. He compiled 20 homers, 26 doubles, seven triples, and 82 RBIs, while stealing 37 bases and scoring 98 runs in 107 games. One area to improve is his discipline in the strike zone (25.8% strikeout rate this season).
The Cubs acquired Crow-Armstrong — who was selected 19th overall by the Mets out of Harvard-Westlake High School (Los Angeles) in the 2020 draft — in a 21 trade deadline deal that sent shortstop Javier Báez to New York. The outfielder has indicated in the past that Baez was his favorite player as a kid growing up as a Cubs fan in California.
As it happened, Baez was a Cubs prospect who received a call up to The Show on August 5, 2014, when the North Siders were in Colorado. In his MLB debut, the shortstop launched a game-clinching homer in the 12th inning to give him his first career hit, and Chicago earned a dramatic win.
Crowe Armstrong is about to start writing his own story with the Cubs.
“I’m here to do my part,” Crowe Armstrong said. “They have something really good here, so whatever I can fit in, I’m happy to do it. However, I can produce and deliver and that’s all I can really think about.”
