Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo has been criticized for throwing shade at Martin Scorsese over the box office numbers for Killers Of The Flower Moon.
The drama began when the 52-year-old director took to his Instagram account to mock the legendary 80-year-old Goodfellas director who has criticized Marvel films in the past.
After Scorsese’s daughter, Francesca, posted a video on TikTok of the legendary director pretending to guide his dog, Russo took to social media to share a video with his dog, which he said he named “Box Office.”
He took aim at the film icon in the caption of the short clip on Instagram, writing: “Looks like we have the same inspiration… @martinscorsese_.”
This was clearly a swipe at Scorsese’s criticism of Marvel films including Russo’s Avengers: Endgame which at the time became the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.8 billion.
This came at a time when Scorsese’s film Killers Of The Flower Moon earned only $9 million over the weekend, ranking third at the US box office.
It has reached a worldwide total of $84.68 million with $40.68 million domestic.

Another compared Russo and Scorsese to the famous “I feel bad for you/I don’t think about you at all” meme from the movie Mad Men featuring Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm) and Michael Ginsberg (played by Ben Feldman).

Scorsese has made a habit of criticizing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) last September, as the film icon criticized the superhero movie genre in a magazine profile.
Talk to GQ Ahead of the release of his latest film, the 80-year-old award-winning director discussed his life, career, and how comic book movies changed the industry.
“The danger is what this does to our culture, because there will be generations now who think movies are just that, these are movies,” Scorsese said.
“Which means we then have to fight harder.” It must come from the grassroots level. It has to come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean?
This is not the first time that Scorsese has attacked Marvel. In 2019, he said that comic book movies are not cinema but more like theme parks.
“I think manufactured content is not really cinema,” Scorsese said. “It’s almost like AI making a movie. That doesn’t mean you don’t have great directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork.
‘But what does that mean? What will these films do and what will they give you? Aside from kind of completing something and then removing it from your mind and your body completely, you know? So what does it give you?
Scorsese said the film industry is no longer what it was nearly seven decades ago when he began his career.
He said that studios “are no longer interested in supporting individual voices expressing their personal feelings or their personal thoughts and personal thoughts and feelings on a big budget.” And what happened now is that they classified it into what they call the Indies.
He is an advocate for film preservation, and this summer he attended a meeting with other famous directors and the head of Warner Bros. Pictures. Discovery’s David Zaslav after recent layoffs at Turner Classic Movies.
Last October, Scorsese criticized the film industry’s “disgusting” obsession with “insulting” cinema ratings.
Since the 1980s, he said, the industry has become more concerned with ratings and how much money films make.
In an interview with GQ, he said he was shocked when executives tried to convince him to let one of the main actors of The Departed live so they could turn it into a franchise.
“What they wanted was privilege.” It was not a moral question for someone to live or die. Then the studio guys came out and were very sad, because they didn’t want this movie. They wanted privilege. Which means: I can’t work here anymore.
He said movie theaters are not dying, but they need to do more to attract people to watch movies.
“I think there will always be theatrical work, because people want to experience that thing together,” Scorsese said.
“But at the same time, theaters have to step up their efforts to make them places that people want to go to and enjoy or want to go to see something that moves them.”
This summer Scorsese’s Goodfellas was voted the best gangster film of all time according to Ranker.
