- But users noticed that their battery drains quickly after installing it
If you have an iPhone, you may have received a notification encouraging you to download the latest iOS update.
The tech giant released iOS 17.1.1 this week which contains several security updates as well as a fix for a strange bug that meant the weather widget wouldn’t display the snow icon.
But new reports may prevent you from downloading it.
Many users who have updated their iPhones claim that iOS 17.1.1 has ruined their battery life, with reports of the charge draining within hours.
Here’s what you should do if you downloaded iOS 17.1.1 and noticed battery drain.
iOS 17.1.1 was released earlier this week to address a bug that caused iPhone 15 models to crash after trying to use wireless charging in some cars.
“In rare cases, Apple Pay and other NFC features may become unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in some vehicles,” Apple said.
The update also fixes another bug in the Weather Lock Screen widget.
Users have noticed that the weather widget displays a file icon instead of a snow icon as well as a dashed line appearing through the weather notification.
While many users have downloaded it, many of them claim that it is causing harm to their iPhone battery.
“After iOS 17.1.1 update, there is an issue with heating and battery drain,” one user wrote to X (formerly Twitter).
Another added: “Battery life on iOS 17.1.1 is terrible!”
“There’s a major battery leak in iOS 17.1.1,” someone vented. The percentage has gone from 100% to 87% in a short period of time.
Fortunately, battery issues are unlikely to persist.
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, a researcher at ZDNet, explained: “Installing a new operating system on an iPhone causes a lot of things to run in the background, from indexing to battery recalibration, and this can last for hours or even days.
“Not only does this consume power, but recalibrating the battery can give the impression that the battery is draining more quickly when in reality it is not.”
“Add to this the dual factor of a lot of app updates happening after a new release, plus a lot of new features available that can put even more drain on an old phone.”
If you’re concerned about your iPhone’s battery and it’s been a few days since you updated to iOS 17.1.1, Kingsley-Hughes advises checking your battery health.
He added: “If you go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and the message says ‘this is good for peak performance’, then either it’s just normal things happening, or something is wrong.”
