John Kirby He called on Congress to authorize the necessary funding to further aid Ukraine during an online briefing on Friday. As he noted, this is necessary before the end of this calendar year, because “after this date, it will be very difficult to provide assistance to the Ukrainians at the level they need.”
US aid to Ukraine is increasingly at risk
– We need this assistance immediately so that we can provide them with uninterrupted assistance – he explained. He also noted that because of Parliament’s delay, the administration has already been forced to limit the amount of arms packages being sent to Ukraine.
The administration is seeking an additional $61 billion, of which almost PLN 12 billion is to be allocated to support the Ukrainian budget (Washington’s financial assistance was stopped at the end of September), and most of it for military aid. It will be part of a broader package that also includes support for Israel, Taiwan and border strengthening.
Despite the administration’s insistence, neither house of Congress has yet advanced a bill, and debate over tightening immigration and asylum policy demanded by Republicans is currently the main obstacle. Republicans also want to cut spending.
The United States rejects Zelensky’s recommendations
At the same time, Kirby rejected the president’s recommendations Volodymyr ZelenskyIn an interview with The Associated Press, he attributed the failure of the Ukrainian offensive in the fall to insufficient support.
Kirby noted that Ukraine got what it needed, and each weapons package was coordinated with representatives from Kiev. Still, he admitted, “it’s hard to blame President Zelensky for wanting more weapons to stop this invasion.”
Ukraine’s president admitted in an AP interview that the Ukrainian military “did not achieve the results he wanted.”
