January is hot in Spain. According to the AEMET weather service, temperatures have been recorded at more than 90 places across the country since the beginning of the month. The unusually warm weather is expected to last through the weekend.
The autonomous communities of Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía should see temperatures of nearly 30 degrees Celsius until the end of January, the National Meteorological Service (AEMET) announced on Thursday.
From early January till Thursday afternoon, more than 90 places in the country recorded record temperatures. According to Spanish meteorologists, the city of Cales, in the autonomous community of Valencia, recorded the highest. The mercury reached 28.9 degrees Celsius there.
The heat does not subside
The AEMET administration said record temperatures are expected in the coming days in the autonomous community of Murcia in the southeast of the country and the Balearic Islands archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Spanish weather service has issued a warning against rising desert sand from Africa in the air over the so-called Canary Islands. Temperatures are expected to rise in Kalima, as well as the archipelago, in the coming days.
Due to the appearance of heat and strong winds, the Canarian services declared a fire threat in the archipelago in January, for the first time in the history of this autonomous community of Spain.
– We're a bit surprised that it's so pleasantly warm. “Now we're happy, but we don't think it's completely normal,” the German tourist told Reuters in an interview.
