AMSTERDAM (AP) — In sometimes violent confrontations, police broke up a protest by pro-Palestinian activists at the University of Amsterdam on Wednesday in the second straight day of unrest over Jerusalem. The war in Gaza.
After the police ended the siege on the university campus, hundreds of demonstrators moved to a nearby square to continue the protest until late in the evening, demanding an end to the war. Some called on the university to sever academic ties with Israel.
It was not clear whether or not how many people were injured during the quarrels and how many demonstrators were arrested by the police.
At Utrecht University, about 45 kilometers to the south, students occupied the university building in protest against Israeli actions in its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Student protests are gaining momentum across Europe, following similar actions on American universities where several camps have sprung up.
The war began after Palestinian armed groups attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people in a surprise attack and taking about 250 hostage. Israel’s retaliatory military operation led to the deaths of more than 34,700 Palestinians, according to local health officials. The Gaza Strip was destroyed.
