The Patriots attracted several parties from the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) bloc, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the BiS.

After the second round of French parliamentary elections on Sunday, the leader of the National Rally, Jordan Bartella, announced in a speech on Monday that he would join the new group. This means the far-right party, associated with pro-Russian politician Marine Le Pen, will leave the Identity and Democracy (TD) group where it has so far sat.

The National Union will be the largest national representative in the new group – including 30 MEPs. Second place will go to the party that launched the new group, Hungarian Fidesz, which will introduce ten MEPs to the new group.

Matteo Salvini’s Italian League of eight MEPs will switch from TD for Europe to Patriots. The politician, also known for his skepticism about the EU’s pro-Ukrainian policy, announced on Monday that he would join the Patriots.

The exodus of the far-right parties would mean the demise of the TD group. In the June European elections, the parties making up this group held a total of 57 seats. However, now the TD Group does not meet regulatory requirements

The new group will be similar to the composition of the disintegrating DD. The establishment of the new group is an image-building move aimed at benefiting both Orbán and Le Pen, unofficially said in the European Parliament. His Fidesz remained unattached to the EP after splitting with the center-right European People’s Party in 2021 over allegations related to the state of the rule of law in Hungary.
