USA vs Japan Women’s Basketball: Score and live updates after Team USA win 55 straight games in Paris

The world’s most dominant women’s basketball team will take to the court for the first time at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris when Team USA takes on Japan on Monday.

The U.S. team is seeking its eighth consecutive gold medal, and comes into the game on a 55-game winning streak dating back to the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona. Japan is simply unlikely to threaten this series against a star-studded U.S. squad led by WNBA stars A’ja Wilson, Brittney Griner, Brianna Stewart and Diana Taurasi. While the veterans will hope to continue Team USA’s dominance, rookie Caitlin Clark was not selected to the team.

  • As the second quarter began, Team USA’s three-point shooting problems continued: Kelly Plum and Joel Lloyd failed to make consecutive three-point shots, which doesn’t inspire much confidence.

  • Team USA 22, Japan 15 after 1st quarter

The US retains the lead as the first quarter ends, but this is not the dominant performance it had hoped for so far.

It was a bit of a struggle for the USA shooting: they only made 1/7 three-pointers and 10/21 shots overall. Fouls were also a big issue for both teams, with the USA committing five fouls and Japan four. There are definitely some things to work on in the second half.

  • A’ja Wilson gets a great pass, but can’t get the ball in as it bounces twice. After some persistence, she makes the shot.

  • A stunning hat trick from Japan’s Mai Yamamoto. The U.S. certainly has a size advantage in this matchup: Yamamoto is just 5’5″, and the tallest member of the team is 6’1″. Meanwhile, the U.S. team has only four players under 6’1″.

  • A great steal from Chelsea Gray, who passed it to A’ja Wilson for a mid-range shot. Diana Taurasi then assisted Wilson hard to give the U.S. a 10-4 lead. After a slow start, the U.S. finally started to gain some momentum on offense.

  • Some mistakes from both sides led to an unexpected closeness in the score and a few goals early in the match. Now the score is 4-4 after three minutes.

  • USA to face Japan in Paris

And off we go! USA thanks to two easy points from A’ja Wilson, who won the jump ball for Team USA.

  • Japan’s starting lineup

Japan will start their campaign with goalkeepers Saori Miyazaki and Mai Yamamoto, and forwards Saki Hayashi, Stephanie Mawley and Evelyn Mawley.

  • As if winning eight consecutive gold medals wasn’t enough, the United States has 72 wins and three losses in its Olympic history. The team’s last loss at the Games was in 1992.

  • US team abandons starting lineup

Brianna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Nafeesa Collier start for the U.S. national team.

  • Today’s match is a rematch of the Tokyo 2020 final, where the United States defeated Japan 90-75 to take the gold medal. Although the United States won with relative ease, Japan played well and will likely be tough to beat today as well. This Japanese team keeps the pace and plays well from beyond the arc.
