The International Olympic Committee has decided that American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise competition at the Paris Olympics after the score was incorrectly calculated.

The International Olympic Committee said the bronze medal had been re-awarded to Romania’s Ana Barbosu after the International Gymnastics Federation said it would respect the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on the issue.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned Chiles’ result after deciding that US coach Cecile Landy’s appeal fell outside the one-minute time limit. Chiles’s score was adjusted by 0.1 points, allowing her to finish third and win the bronze medal over Barboso.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said it would be in contact with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee regarding the return of the medal.

USA Gymnastics said it was shocked by the CAS decision.

“The investigation into the difficulty rating of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was submitted in good faith, and we believe it complies with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring,” the federation wrote.

Chiles said she was “deeply saddened” to learn of the CAS decision and would be taking a break from social media for a while. With the result removed, Chiles dropped to fifth place with her new result.

She received support from her teammates on social media.

“Sending you so much love Jordan. Hold your head up high Olympic champion, we love you,” Simone Biles wrote on Instagram.
