Oasis reunion: Liam and Noel Gallagher announce comeback hours before announcement

Liam Gallagher has long expressed his belief that Oasis should never have split up in the first place. In 2017, he said: The Independent“I’d rather be in a band,” said The Biz music editor Roisin O’Connor shortly after the release of his debut solo album. “We should have never broken up, but I certainly don’t yearn for that, you know what I mean? I needed that four years ago, but I certainly don’t need it now. I’d rather be in a band – a band that makes the same kind of noise as Oasis.”

The Gallagher brothers continued to play Oasis hits during their time away, but they tended to perform only songs they sang themselves. Here’s Mark Beaumont’s review of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at Glastonbury Festival 2022, during which he notes that Noel “sticks to the vocal chorus and soaring chants – ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Whatever’, ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’, ‘Half the World Away’.”

In the decade and a half since Oasis last performed together, rumours of a possible reunion have sometimes seemed like wishful thinking. In 2016, The Independent Talk to Matt Whitecross about his documentary Oasis. faster than sound When the director was asked if the brothers would ever work together again, he replied, “I don’t think they know that themselves.”

One reason Noel Gallagher might be looking to regroup is that he has been single again since last December, and announced at the time that he was ready to return to ’90s-style partying.

Earlier this year, Liam Gallagher and former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire sat down with The IndependentLaura Barton of S discusses her collaborative record Liam Gallagher John Squire.

At the time, Liam was quite candid about his brother. “I haven’t seen him in a long time, man,” he said. “But I think he was at my mom’s house last weekend. He seems fine, man. He seems happier in his own skin. Shocking surprise.”

He added that he feels like “all the olive branches I had are gone. I don’t have any left,” but said that if Noel reached out to him, he would be very happy. “One hundred percent. He’s my brother, and I love him.”

Could Noel Gallagher have overcome his reluctance to reunite with Oasis because he’s unsure how long he has left? The 57-year-old songwriter recently predicted he’d be “lucky” to make it to 60.

“Just because Jagger can do 103 doesn’t mean everyone can do it,” he joked.

Rumours of an Oasis reunion have been swirling since June, when we reported that a “Dedicated to Noel Gallagher” sign was spotted at Liam’s concert at London’s O2 Academy. Here’s what we had to say at the time:

Liam Gallagher headlined the Reading Festival yesterday, playing Oasis’ classic 1994 debut album Sure maybe Completely.
