Marriage where one party is dead is not a new idea. In France, such a law was created in 1803 – as in Russia, it concerns the widows of war veterans.
Similar practices were implemented in Nazi Germany. Pregnant women can marry their fallen husbands. The idea is to provide surnames and benefits to single mothers.
The most famous example of this law is Franz Kutscher's Norwegian wife. The Nazi convict died on February 1, 1944 in Warsaw. His marriage took place during the funeral on 4th February.
Now in Russia the idea of marriage after death appeared. However, the details of benefits for Russian women whose partners have died in Ukraine are unknown. Aware of Russian 'generosity', the Kremlin's aim is purely propaganda – to show that Moscow cares and cares about its widowed citizens.
