SANA news agency reported that an Israeli missile attack on the Syrian Aleppo airport destroyed the runway and made it out of service.
Syrian state media, quoting a military source, said that an Israeli air attack on Aleppo airport in northern Syria damaged the runway and made it out of service following the second attack on the airport in less than a week.
On Tuesday, the SANA news agency said that the Israeli missile attack started from the Mediterranean Sea, west of the coastal city of Latakia at 8:16 pm local time (17:16 GMT).
SANA said that the Syrian air defenses intercepted and shot down several Israeli missiles.
He did not mention any injuries, but only reported “material damage”.
The Ministry of Transport said that all flights will be diverted to the capital, Damascus. The private Cham Wings Airlines said in a statement that it will divert all its flights from Aleppo to Damascus International Airport. She added that passengers will be transported by buses free of charge between the two cities.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on an extensive network of sources on the ground for its information, the airstrike also destroyed warehouses belonging to Iran-backed fighters.
Al Jazeera has not been able to independently verify the allegations of the attacks, but Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks inside Syria since 2011.
Aleppo airport suffered material damage from Israeli missile attacks on August 31, according to Syrian state media.
Satellite imagery, analyzed by the Associated Press, showed that last week’s raid had blown a hole in the runway and damaged a building close to the military side of the airport.
The Syrian foreign minister said last week that the attack had “completely destroyed the navigation station and its equipment”.
Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks on targets inside government-controlled areas of Syria since the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, but it rarely acknowledges or discusses these operations. However, Israel has acknowledged that it is targeting the bases of Iran-aligned militant groups such as Hezbollah, which has sent thousands of fighters to support Assad’s forces.
In June, Israeli airstrikes temporarily shut down Damascus International Airport.
