While thousands of moviegoers are gearing up for double features from Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Nolan himself is the one getting madly excited about Barpenheimer’s. Although his film would battle Barbie at the box office, Nolan recently Tell IGN It’s “great” that both summer tent poles open on the same day.
“Summer, in a healthy market, is always crowded, and we’ve been doing that for a long time,” Nolan said. “I think for those of us who are into movies, we’ve been really waiting to have a crowded market again, and now it’s here and it’s great.”
Cillian Murphy, who starred in Oppenheimer, agrees with Nolan, says IGNI think it’s great. I mean, I’m going to go see Barbie. I can’t wait to see it. I think it’s great for the industry and for the audience that we have two great films by great directors coming out on the same day. You could spend the whole day at the cinema, what’s better than that? ?
“I love the fact that people talk about going to two movies in a weekend,” added Oppenheimer co-star Matt Damon. “son [Affleck] And I was going to two movies every weekend, and I think people should be doing that.”
A third Oppenheimer cast member, Emily Blunt, called it “cool” that the two films opened simultaneously because “the interest in diversity is just so wonderful.”
While “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” were originally considered to be rivals (most likely because Nolan left the Warner Bros. studio “Barbie” after more than a decade to produce “Oppenheimer” at Universal), the two films have begun to sway each other in recent weeks. AMC Theaters reported on July 10 that more than 20,000 AMC Stubs members had purchased tickets to see both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day.
“The fact that more than 20,000 moviegoers have already made plans and bought tickets to see ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ on the same day is a great sign that the growing online conversation about seeing both amazing films is turning into ticket sales,” said Elisabeth Frank, Vice President Executive Director of Global Programming and Chief Content Officer at AMC Theatres.
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” opens in theaters July 21 from Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures, respectively.
