ANAHEIM – It was 1 a.m. in Alabama when senior prospect Sam Bachmann got the call that he was going to the Majors for the first time to join the Angels’ bullpen after starting six times with Double-A Rocket City. But it didn’t stop him from calling his friends and family to wake them up with the news.

Bachman, the 9th overall in the 2021 draft and the club’s No. 5 prospect in the MLB Pipeline, found out about his promotion just hours after Wednesday’s game and his contract was officially picked up ahead of Friday’s game against the Marlins. He was exclusively a starter in Minors but would give the Angels a much needed strong arm in relief.

“Oh yeah, I called every single one of them and they all answered,” Bachman said with a smile. “At first, they were worried, but then they were excited to hear I got the call. Not many people slept that night, including me. But it was amazing and it still feels surreal.”

Bachman made his debut in the Angels’ 6-2 loss to the Marlins at Angel Stadium, striking out four hits while allowing one run with four hits and two runs. The native of Fishers, Indiana, had 11 family members and a girlfriend present for his debut.

“I was so excited,” Bachman said. “It was a dream come true, and I just tried not to fall there on the way up the mound. But it was a great experience.”

Backman, 23, came to the Majors after posting a 4.48 ERA with 74 strikeouts and 49 walks in 84 1/3 innings in the minors over the past three seasons. Used as a starter for the Minors, including this season, he posted a 5.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 20 walks in 26 1/3 innings pitched.

Bachman’s walk total is a concern, in part because of his trouble adjusting to the pre-rigged test balls used in Double-A this year. However, the Angels and other club pitchers have him throw bullpen games and side sessions with major league baseballs to prepare should they be called upon.

Bachman’s fastball averaged 96.3 mph in his debut, while he mixed at slider and cutter. Manager Phil Nevin liked what he saw from Bachman but indicated he needed better leadership going forward.

“He was good, but he has to throw the fastball for strikes,” Nevin said. “I love stuff. I know there was a lot of adrenaline, a lot of nerves, a lot of family here tonight. So on day one in the big leagues I kind of push the results to the side.”

The decision to call Bachmann was another aggressive decision for the Angels, as they also had rookie Zach Nieto at shortstop and Chase Silseth in the bullpen. Neto, 22, was the club’s first choice last year and Silseth, 23, is 11 in 2022.

“I think we’re going to be as aggressive as we get our best team, our best product out on the field to compete and win,” Nevin said. “We’ve prepared ourselves after 50 odd games where everything we want is right in front of us to accomplish. We’re always looking for ways to make the best possible roster.”

Nevin added that both Silseth and Bachman could return to starting in the future and that this was more about need in the bullpen. The Angels have been looking for ways to bridge the gap to set up man Matt Moore and closer Carlos Estevez, and they think Selseth and Bachman can help with that.

“There were a lot of guys who got into the big leagues and learned how to play here and eventually became a starter,” Nevin said. “It doesn’t rule out. We’re just doing what’s best for us to win matches at the moment. And that’s how we feel.”

The biggest change will be his routine, Bachman said, because he’s never felt comfortable outside of a few spring training games this season. But he said he has learned from that experience and will rely on the veterans and Celseth for advice.

“I’ve already talked to a lot of people here about routines and changing it,” Bachmann said. “I think there’s going to be a smooth process for sure. And talking to Chase as well, he’s kind of come into that role and it’s really helped me. I’ll follow him around, see what he’s doing. I think it’ll really help.”
