– President Milorad Todic said a few days ago that because of the UN resolution on Srebrenica, we should follow the path of secession from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He added that Serbia should understand this.
In May, the UN The General Assembly is scheduled to vote on a resolution on the Srebrenica genocide, which will, among other things, establish July 11 – the anniversary of the events in eastern BiH – as International Genocide Remembrance Day.
Let's remind. In July 1995, more than 8,000 people were massacred near Srebrenica – a so-called safe area under UN supervision until it was taken over by the Serbs. Men and boys, Bosnian Muslims. The remains of around a thousand victims are still being searched for.
Todic announced earlier that “regional authorities are already showing determination to implement measures aimed at achieving the independence of the Serb-majority region of BiH”. He also denied that genocide took place near Srebrenica.
The RS leader said that after the resolution, nothing will be like before and RS should work only for its own benefit. – Since it is no longer possible to live together, Podokšare (the village where the monument to the victims of Srebrenica is located – ed.) can be handed over to the Muslims in order to separate.
– said Todic.
Is Europe at risk of another war? The expert draws the attention of NATO forces in the region
“Fakt” spoke to Adam Balzer, program director at the College of Eastern Europe, about the risk of war in the Balkans. According to the political scientist, its origins are not as clear as the titles of the journal articles suggest. However…
– The situation cannot be underestimated. Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of two parts. One is Republika Srpska, which can be described as an electoral autocracy. Todik is a very pro-Russian politician. He was recently in Moscow and bowed before Putin, the expert explains.
Plus, we have Serbia, the largest country in the region. Belgrade cooperates closely with Republika Srpska in Bosnia. Serbia's political elite has a pro-Russian attitude, though not to the extent of Todic. This means you have to be careful, because there is a possibility that Russia can “trouble” through its protectorates in the Balkans.
– We are listening.
In a worst-case scenario, “we can imagine that Todic, alone or pushed by Russia, could trigger military action,” Palzer notes. – Only the Serbs know, then they will have NATO against them. However, Moscow will leave them like Armenia. However, the Russians know it will damage their relationship with Turkey, which has great influence in the region and the fate of Bosnians is crucial to that, he argues.
“If Donald Trump wins the US presidential election, the situation could be interesting,” points out the political scientist. – Todic loves Trump and believes in his support for the breakup of Bosnia. – We find out.
According to Balzer, Russia cannot send military support to Bosnia if the conflict escalates. – Serbia and Republika Srpska is a place surrounded by NATO countries and bases. – Expert in a nutshell.
