Beijing has recorded more than 300 hours of subzero temperatures in the past two weeks, setting a record for the coldest two-week period in the Chinese capital since officials began tracking.
The official Beijing Daily reported that the two-week period that began on December 11 saw the highest number of hours of low temperatures since 1951, the Associated Press reported.
The city also saw nine consecutive days in which the temperature reached at least 14 degrees Fahrenheit.
The National Center of Weatherology recorded all-time low temperatures during the month of December, the Associated Press reported. Average temperatures in other parts of China also reached record levels in 1961, the AP reported, citing the center.
The Beijing Meteorological Observatory announced early on December 26 local time that temperatures would rise and reach 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday. The low can drop to 17.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
Earlier this year, in June, Beijing experienced its hottest day on record, with temperatures reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
