Bryce Harper’s post-game reaction to getting hit twice before the benches cleared – NBC Sports Philadelphia

SAN FRANCISCO — The benches and bullpen were cleared in the top of the fourth inning at Oracle Park during Wednesday’s finale after Giants left-hander Kyle Harrison reached for Bryce Harper on back-to-back pitches, nearly hitting him both times.

Harper barked at Harrison after the first 94 mph high-speed heater. He seemed to be shouting: “What are you doing, man?”

On the next pitch, Harrison threw higher and inside at 93 mph and hit Harper’s bat handle, knocking him off his back and taking off his helmet.

Harper and Alec Bohm talked with Giants catcher Curt Casale as dugouts, bullpens and clubhouses were emptied. Harper stayed out of the mix as some pushing and shoving took place around the pitch. Giants hitting coach and former Phillie Pat Burrell appears to be in the middle of it.

Both seats were warned. There were no ejaculations, and Harper himself seemed to have calmed down during the delay. After the game, Casali told reporters that he appreciated Harper’s calming down and reacted the way he did when the players swarmed the field.

When play resumed, the Giants defied the rule on the infield (hit by pitch) and overturned after clearly showing that they had hit Harper’s bat.

“I think our guys were a little upset because he came up a few times on the Harp,” manager Rob Thompson said. “And it looked worse than it was because the helmet flipped over and that’s when it broke. From our perspective it looked like he was hit there, so I think everyone got a little out of shape. But everyone kind of calmed down. Under.”

You can understand Harper’s reaction when he got hit in the face in 2021 by Genesis Cabrera and broke his thumb the following year in San Diego when he was hit by Blake Snell.

The no-hitter ended in a shutout with the Phillies leading by two runs at the time.

The Phillies did not believe Harrison had any intention beyond the pitches.

“He didn’t mean it,” Harper said. “You just don’t want to get hit in the face. You get hit in the face, man, it’s not fun. That’s all.”

There was no bickering between the two sides after that bat. The Phillies went on to win the game, 6-1.

“Emotions run high anytime you get a fastball near your head,” Nick Castellanos said. “It’s a scary thing. Something happened, he had some words, something else happened, and everything just kind of happened. It’s not a logical time to think. It comes so fast, it’s over your head, it’s scary.”
