Novak Djokovic is looking to win his third major title in 2023 and the 24th of his illustrious career. Standing in his way at the All England Club is top seed Carlos Alcaraz, who is chasing his first win at Wimbledon and second Grand Slam overall.
After Djokovic won the first set 6-1, the second set defined the kind of back-and-forth action expected from this nascent rivalry. Djokovic initially fell 2-0 before falling back, with the set remaining on serve until the tiebreaker. Alcaraz had to fight back a single point from Djokovic before eventually prevailing 9-7 in a tie-break to even the match in one set apiece. He also ended Djokovic’s amazing Grand Slam streak of 15 consecutive tiebreaker wins.
Alcaraz continued the momentum by breaking Djokovic in the opening game of the third set. He broke it again to lead 4-1 in one of the most exciting matches in Wimbledon history. The numbers don’t lie: 33 points, 13 draws, nearly 27 minutes. Alcaraz took eight points off Djokovic – and had seven break points – before winning. He then made quick work of the rest of the set to win 6-1 and take a two-sets-to-one lead in the match.
