Today marks the birth centenary of the legendary Akkineni Nageswara Rao, popularly known as ANR. Born on September 20, 1923, ANR’s life and contributions to Hindi cinema are still celebrated even though he left us years ago. The Akkineni family has begun a year-long celebration of the legend and today marks the first day with the unveiling of the Panchaloha statue at Annapurna Studios.
ANR’s journey from a humble village in Andhra Pradesh to becoming a prominent figure in the Telugu film industry is the stuff of legends. His lasting legacy is a testament to his unparalleled talent, dedication and indomitable spirit.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning over seven decades, ANR has graced the silver screen with his brilliant acting prowess. His ability to portray a wide range of characters, from tragic heroes to charming lovers, has earned him a special place in the hearts of fans. It has delivered some epic classics as well as box office wonders. His filmography is filled with blockbuster hits and critically acclaimed performances. No wonder his trophy cabinet includes some awards like Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushan and several Nandi Awards.
Besides his cinematic achievements, ANR was a multi-faceted personality. He founded Annapurna Studios, a production house that played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Telugu cinema. Annapurna Studio is one of the landmarks of Tollywood even today by providing state-of-the-art facilities for film making. Annapurna Film and Media College is also the brainchild of ANR and has been successfully implemented by the family.
His philanthropic endeavors through the Akkineni International Foundation have demonstrated his commitment to preserving and promoting Indian culture and cinema on a global scale. Carrying forward Akkineni’s legacy is Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya, Akhil and other family members with their talent and perseverance.
