The proposal to involve air defense from NATO countries, particularly Poland and Romania, was supported by members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Green Party.
Will NATO shoot down missiles over Ukraine? Germany points to aid given to Israel
Roderich Kiesewetter, a CDU representative and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, cited the example of Israel, saying that the United States, Great Britain, France and other Western countries helped repel Iran’s airstrikes. He emphasized that this example shows that NATO is not recognized as a party to the conflict.
Anton Hofreiter, head of the Bundestag’s European policy committee, said the air defense systems could be used to destroy Russian missiles from the territory of Poland and Romania. Greens MP Agnieszka Brooker said air defense systems should be deployed along neighboring countries’ borders so that “the western part of Ukraine can be protected”.
At the same time, to implement this idea, new air defense systems and missiles have to be prepared, according to the Member of Parliament of the Freedom Democratic Party, Marcus Faber.
