Dak Prescott didn’t know the Dallas Cowboys would trade another quarterback, but the move to acquire Trey Lance from the 49ers on Friday didn’t surprise him.
The veteran caller first spoke about the move Saturday after the Cowboys’ preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, telling reporters why Lance’s inclusion made sense.
“Obviously, I understand that this is a business. She’s a first-round talent and you’re always trying to improve your team,” said Prescott. “But that was the front office, so we’ll welcome him as we would any team-mate and hope he makes us better, and we’ll keep coming back to him knowing we have one goal.” as a team.”
Lance was dealt to Dallas after being told by 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan that he would be the No. 3 quarterback on the team, behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, a year after starting last season at QB1. But injuries have hampered Lance’s development, and the 23-year-old has asked San Francisco to find him a chance elsewhere, if possible, in 2023.
Now, Lance is the Cowboys’ assumed No. 3 quarterback behind Prescott and Cooper Rush, which means the team’s current No. 3 quarterback Will Grier is the odd man out. After lighting up the field on Saturday, Grier likely won’t be on the Dallas roster with Lance in the mix. Prescott said after the game that his heart and mind were with Greer.
“This guy just screwed up,” Prescott said. “That’s Will.” “That’s who Will has been since he’s been here. It was great that he got out there and showed that performance and I hope the rest of the league sees that and notices.”
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters after the game that he was excited about Lance’s acquisition.
“I think any time you have an opportunity to trust the grades of your staff – he’s obviously a guy who’s highly regarded in all organizations, and it’s no different in ours,” McCarthy said. “The timing of that is tough.”
McCarthy praised Greer’s performance, whose eyes were hazy as he spoke to reporters after the match.
“I think my play speaks for itself,” said Greer. “I’m a team member first… At the end of the day, it’s about the numbers. It’s just part of the job I’m signed up for. It’s hard, it’s hard, because you get close to people. But at the same time I’ll be fine, everybody’s going to be fine. “
The NFL can be a tough business, as Lance and Grier discovered last week. But every team has only the goal of improvement in mind, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones appears confident he’s found a Prescott heir after missing out on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts in the 2020 NFL Draft.
“Two years ago we were looking at the quarterback in Philadelphia,” Jones told reporters on Saturday. “If he had fallen into our hands we would have recruited him. It’s our plan when we can, but rarely does it happen, to have someone of a high enough quality to be in place with our recruiting choice.
“We’re excited [Lance]”.
