Tuscaloosa law enforcement announced that University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles has been arrested and charged with first degree murder in connection with a shooting near campus Sunday that left a 23-year-old woman dead.

“We have learned of the latest charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, who is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team,” the University of Alabama athletics said in a statement Sunday.

Michael Lynn Davis, 20, is also charged in the shooting, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crime Unit said in a statement. It added that both suspects are charged with premeditated murder and are being held without bail.

Investigators said Miles was the only person involved associated with the University of Alabama.

CNN was unable to determine whether the suspects had attorneys.

Police returned gunfire at about 1:45 a.m. local time Sunday and found collector Jonay Harris shot dead while sitting in a car less than half a mile from the university’s campus, according to a statement from the Violent Crimes Unit.

Investigators said the driver of the car told police that someone had fired at his car and said he returned fire in self-defense, possibly hitting one of the suspects.

“After processing the scenes, speaking with several witnesses and viewing video surveillance, two suspects were developed,” the statement read.

Investigators said one of the suspects was hit by return fire and had a non-life-threatening wound,

Unit Captain Jack Kennedy said, “It appears that the sole motive for this was a simple altercation between these personnel and the victim as they were out on The Strip.” The Strip is a hub for restaurants and businesses near campus.
