In 2022, Google announced that it had eliminated the Assisted Driving mode that provided a home screen for the “Control Panel.” This left another improved UI in Google Maps for Android, which was also called Driving Mode, but now also faces discontinuation in February 2024.
About APK Insight: In this APK Insight post, we break down the latest version of the app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we unpack these files (called APK files, in the case of Android apps), we are able to see different lines of code within those that hint at potential future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ship these features at all, and our explanation of what they are may be incomplete. We'll try to enable those that are close to being finished, however, to show you what they'll look like when they charge. With that in mind, read on.
The latest Google app (14.52) contains the following strings:
- <اسم السلسلة =”el_deprecation_pre_launch_tooltip_description”>This view will disappear in February
- <اسم السلسلة =”el_deprecation_post_launch_tooltip_description”>To call, send messages, or stream media on the go, tap the microphone to use Assistant.
We think this refers to the remaining “driving mode” in Google Maps for Android. The feature that Google previously discontinued was known as the “Assistive Driving Mode Dashboard.” This provided a home screen with a map, media suggestions, and volume controls as well as call and text message shortcuts. This was supposed to replace Android Auto for phone screens, although most users viewed it as a downgrade to the previous version.

In comparison, Google Maps driving mode is accessed after you initiate navigation while driving and appears as a black bar at the bottom of your phone's screen. There's quick access to Assistant, Google Maps, a compatible music player, podcasts, audiobooks, and other streaming apps, plus an optimized media UI with large touch targets.
Back in 2022, Google said it was focusing on driving mode on Maps and found that most people were using that experience via the dashboard. With that gone, users may be directed to Google Maps-only navigation mode (below) — “Hey Google, turn on driving mode,” which rolled out faster Assistant-powered voice input in June.
Chains describing neglect do not even exist today.
