Elon Musk booed by audience at Dave Chappelle’s comedy concert

Tech billionaire Elon Musk He was met with a mixture of boos and cheers from the audience at Dave Chappelle’s comedy show Sunday night.

In a video shared on Twitter, the crowd can be heard mocking Musk, whose recent purchase of the social media platform drew criticism over concerns about mass layoffs and content moderation.

“Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world,” Chappelle told the audience. A number of audience members cheered – though there was a loud chorus of boos as well.

“You weren’t expecting this, were you?” Musk tells Chappelle after being booed.

Chappelle replies, “Looks like some of the people I fired are in the audience.”

Later in the video, Chappelle says, “All these booing people, I’m just pointing out the obvious – they’ve got bad seats on the field.”

The owner of the video posted to Twitter appears to have had their account suspended or deleted, with a message saying: “This tweet is from an account that no longer exists.”

Twitter, which laid off several communications staff in its move to cut nearly half of its workforce, was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.

Twitter user James Yu, who said he was at Chappelle’s show, said, chirp: “80% of the boos in the stadium are good. 18,000 people.”

“Dave gave him plenty of opportunities to talk but he put his hands in his pockets,” Yu added.

“I actually felt bad for him. I’m in no way an Elon fan, I was a meanie. I wanted to shake it up: For the love of a god man, say something and pretend it’s a tweet!!”

Musk came under fire for a tweet on Sunday targeting Anthony Fauci, the outgoing US chief medical adviser, who was the face of the White House’s response to Covid-19. The tweet added fuel to a wave of online abuse and intrigue directed at the veteran immunologist.

In the tweet, Musk mocked the use of pronouns to refer to a person’s gender. “My conscience is on trial / Fauci,” the billionaire wrote on Twitter.

Several Twitter users decried the tweet’s hostile connotations. Chappelle himself has been the target of criticism for making transphobic jokes on his Netflix special, “The Closer.”
