Stephen Colbert once again entangled himself a bit with beleaguered Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday, much to the chagrin of the world’s richest man for losing $170 billion in calendar year 2022.
While reviewing the day’s headlines in the “Late Show” segment, Colbert went over to Musk, saying, “After a series of very public setbacks, the loss of Elon Musk’s fortune for 2022 has surpassed $100 billion.”
The live studio audience applauded before Colbert offered him some comfort and advice.
“Listen, Elon: I know tightening your belts isn’t fun, but you’re not alone in these tough economic times! Yes? We all need to reduce the number of what we’re putting out into space.”
musk He is still the richest man in the world with a net worth of $169.8 billion, According to Bloomberg and the Billionaires Index. But the CEO, 51, lost $169.8 billion in the last calendar year after taking home $8.6 billion on Monday. For 2022, it’s down $100.5 billion after hitting a personal best of $340 billion, which is slightly up from last year, as reported by Bloomberg.
Twitter is not the only company that has caused discord.
Musk’s Tesla shares, which make up most of his wealth, are trading at their lowest level since November 2020, thanks to a series of challenges facing the electric car maker. These include supply chain issues and rising material costs, issues related to COVID in China, and a tail light recall that has affected more than 300,000 vehicles. As a result, Tesla shares have fallen 57.52% in the past year. After falling 6.8% in New York trading on Monday, the TSLA rebounded slightly on Tuesday to close 1.22% higher at 169.91.
Colbert also mocked Musk earlier this week for backing off Twitter advertisers, joking that Musk’s SpaceX is, thankfully, still sticking with their “big Twitter ad campaign.”
“Yeah, Elon SpaceX is going to save Elon’s Twitter. It’s a fool’s circle!” Colbert said, before blasting into the song “Circle of Life,” which inspired Elon’s solar panel company Elon to save Elon’s Twitter.
