Finland’s outgoing prime minister announced Wednesday that she is divorcing her husband — just months after she came under fire for partying at work and dancing “too closely” with another man.
Prime Minister Sanna Marin, 37, and her husband of three years, Markus Raikkonen, shared on Instagram Stories that they have jointly filed for divorce.
“We are grateful for our 19 years together and our beloved daughter. We will remain best friends,” they wrote.
The former couple married in August 2020, when Finland was battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We lived our youth together, entered adulthood together and grew up to be parents to our cherished daughter together,” Maren wrote on Instagram at the time.
Marin, who was the world’s youngest prime minister when she was elected at the age of 34 in 2019, had to defend her work ethic last August when videos of her wild partying – including footage of her grinding against an unknown man – were leaked.
“[Marin] Act like one of twenty something. “It was hard to believe she was married,” a witness told Finnish media on a wild night out.
Marin later issued a tearful public apology.
“I am also a human being,” Marin said, adding, “I do my job. I learn from this.
Despite the misstep, Marin has remained popular with younger moderates, many of whom have hailed her as a role model for young progressive millennial leaders.
She conceded last month after her Social Democratic party failed in the Finnish parliamentary elections.
She is expected to step down as party leader when the new parliament begins in the fall.
