2024 NFL Preseason, Week 2: What We Learned From Saturday’s Games

NEW YORK — New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones looked wobbly in his first game back. The long-awaited return to action got off to a shaky start as he nearly got picked off on his first throw. He continued to struggle through his first three attempts, two of which ended in interceptions, including one after an attempted throw to avoid a safety. Jones settled down a bit over the course of the first half, most notably passing the ball to Darius Slayton for a 44-yard touchdown. Jones also gave a first taste of a potential duo with Malik Nabers, catching four catches for 54 yards, including two of the rookie’s big touchdowns. With just one game left before the stats start counting, the Giants will want to see more from Jones after getting behind him as a starter.

NFL Preseason Week 2: A look at the top players and schedule – ESPN

NEW YORK — Nothing that happened in Daniel Jones’ first preseason start since injuring the ACL in his right knee last November will make the Giants feel any better about their starting quarterback, especially considering they were looking for a potential replacement for him this offseason.

Jones threw two interceptions on his first three attempts, including an ill-advised interception just outside his own end zone. He was actually lucky it wasn’t three-of-three because his first pass hit defensive back Derek Stingley Jr. in the chest. Maybe it was rust. Or nerves. Or maybe it’s just the reason the Giants are looking for a replacement for him.

At least Jones and the Giants were able to leave with a better taste in their mouths after playing a much better second quarter. Jones passed the ball to Darius Slayton deep down the right sideline for a 44-yard gain and two scoring drives. He looked healthy and moved well when needed, which may have been the most important thing. Wide receiver Malik Nabers also backed up the hype with four catches for 54 yards on a rollercoaster afternoon for the offense.

DraftKings Win Total: 6.5 (Under-135)
Brinson’s projected record: 6-11

It’s hard to be pessimistic about this team when you watch Malik Nabers’ training camp highlights. The first-round pick was a non-stop highlight reel until he suffered a minor ankle sprain recently. It all really comes down to Daniel Jones and the offensive line. If the defense holds up, we might get a healthy Danny Deems in 2022 and this team looks much better on offense. Saquon Barkley’s departure could be a good thing, as it should allow the offense to run more smoothly without trying to focus on one guy. Adding Brian Burns alongside Dexter Lawrence and Kevon Thibodeau could create a really bad pass rush that could even make up for any deficiencies in the secondary.
