Google is working on two sizes of the Pixel Watch 3

That the Pixel Watch was too small was a major design complaint with the first- and second-generation wearables. According to a source familiar with the matter, Google plans to address this by developing two sizes of the Pixel Watch 3 for this year.

While the Pixel Watch 2 has key spec upgrades over the original, Google has kept largely the same design, including a 41mm diameter and 12.3mm thickness. The crown is the main visual difference, but you have to look at the lower sensor array to differentiate between the two.

People are quite in tune with the size of things worn on the wrist. While the Pixel Watch works well for some, others find it too small. In the case of wearables, a larger watch case often allows for better specifications, including a larger battery and more space for sensors. In smartwatches, larger displays can provide a meaningful upgrade in what you can see, do, and interact with.

At this point, we're not aware of any plans on Google's part to differentiate functionality between the two sizes beyond the display and perhaps a slightly larger battery. The recent reorganization of Fitbit and Google devices shouldn't impact product development in the short term, although obviously plans could change before launch.

Considering the competitive landscape, Samsung offers the Galaxy Watch 6 in 40mm and 44mm sizes. It also sells the 43mm and 47mm Galaxy Watch 6 Classic with identical screen sizes (1.31-inch and 1.47-inch) but with the addition of a rotating bezel and the use of stainless steel instead of aluminum. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 9 is available in 41mm or 45mm.

Hopefully, Google will also take the time to make the bezel smaller and add a larger screen on the smaller model. One big question is whether the current bands will be compatible with the new larger size given the curvature.

By offering a larger variant, Google addresses the most significant complaint. Sure, there are tales of people choosing Samsung because the Pixel Watch is too small for them.
