Harry Styles surprised fans by joining Stevie Nicks on stage at a concert in London on Friday night to honor former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie.
The duo performed a duet on two of Nicks’ biggest hits, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and “Landslide,” to celebrate McVie’s 81st birthday.
“At the end of the show, since the end of last year and since Kristen died, I was saying something about her, and I asked Harry to do that with me, and it’s hard to ask someone to sing a heavy song about a best friend who died suddenly and very sadly,” Nicks told the earnestly listening crowd at BST Hyde Park.
“What I want to tell you is that Christine was Harry’s girl, she was my girl, she was your girl, and she loved all of you, and today would have been her birthday.”
Nicks, 76, held the 30-year-old singer’s hand as she spoke about McVie. He appeared emotional but remained composed.
Styles wore a blue suit and a pin embroidered with a songbird, in homage to Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird,” a song from their 1977 hit album “Rumours.” McVie sang the tune.
Ahead of the show – in which the British artist played guitar – Nicks also told fans that they had helped her cope with McVie’s sudden death by letting her sing.
“My mother always used to tell me when I was a kid: When I was hurting, she would say, ‘Stevie, when you’re hurting, you always have to run to the stage,’ and that’s what I’ve been doing since Chris died,” the singer recalled.
McVeigh died unexpectedly in November 2022 at the age of 79.
The following April, her death certificate was issued, revealing that she had suffered an ischemic stroke, which occurs when certain areas of the brain experience restricted blood flow.
Cancer was also found in her body but its source is still unknown.
After her death, Styles paid tribute to the iconic musician. By playing the song “Songbird” During a December 2022 concert in Chile, which was part of His famous “Love on Tour”.
When he finished the song, he blew a kiss in the air and said, “Thank you, Christine.”
Nix described McVey as “the best friend in the whole wide world since day one of 1975” in a handwritten note she shared online after news of her death broke.
She expressed her regret for not being able to say goodbye to her friend in person and concluded her message with words from the band Haim.
“I had a best friend but she became a reality / I wish I could see her now / You always remind me that memories will last / These arms reach out to me,” some of the lyrics go.
