Police were notified of the shooting at the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campsite around 6:30 a.m. local time on Friday. At the scene, in a tent, officers found three people shot to death. Police said the victims were related to each other, but did not release any details.
The authorities immediately evacuated everyone who arrived at the camp, including those in the children’s camp.
Later in the west of the park, the body of a 23-year-old man, the alleged killer, was found who committed suicide. The reason for the killing at the camp is not known.
The man is from the state of Nebraska, and police have not ruled out that he had any previous contact with the victims.
