Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is now officially available on Switch, and retro gamers who picked up the game are now discovering all sorts of cool (and not-so-cool) things about it.
In case you missed it, something really cool about this game is that when you set up your profile, you’re asked to select your “favorite NES game” (or Famicom game) from a list that seems to contain all A game under the sun from this classic Nintendo console library.
This has been highlighted on social media, and our video producer Zion Grassl pointed it out in our “hands-on” preview for Nintendo Life in June. Here’s what he had to say:
They also allow you to share your favorite NES game with the world. They list every game ever officially released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, even games that I assume were not mentioned due to licensing issues, such as Spy vs Spy And SupermanYou’ve made it to the list. There’s no cover art, but there’s one small detail that makes me feel like I’ve been a NES fan for 25 years. I look forward to scanning the list for Earthly beginnings And bubble“.”
Well, if you don’t already own this new release, this is the kind of great old-school gaming Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition has to offer. Unfortunately, not everything about this game has been well-received, like the leaderboards. Here’s what our reviewer PJ O’Reilly had to say about it in an updated part of our Nintendo Life review:
“Since the game’s launch, it’s become clear that the leaderboards here don’t work exactly as we imagined in the game, and this is causing quite a stir among players. The leaderboards are not freely accessible at all times, and you can’t view friends or compete directly with their scores. Furthermore, you can only access the rankings at the end of the weekly challenge, so there is no freedom in how you choose to compete. A crazy decision, and one we didn’t expect to happen. Let’s hope they come up with a solution as soon as possible“
In some related news, Nintendo has already released an update that unlocks Survival Mode and includes some fixes.
