Gunn did not refer to Cavill or Superman by name, but many DC fans were dismayed last week when the director announced he’d be writing a new Superman movie that would focus on the hero’s early days – and therefore not bring back Cavill. The news was especially for some fans hoping for Cavill’s return after he appeared in a post-credits scene for “Black Adam” and announced on social media in the fall that he was officially back as Superman.
Cavill also addressed the DC fans on Instagram after the news broke last week.
“It’s sad news for everyone. After all, I won’t be returning as Superman. It wasn’t the easiest news, but that’s life,” Cavill wrote, after asking the studio to announce my return in October, before they were hired. “I respect that James and Peter have a world to build. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes.”
Gunn called out “a certain minority of people online” who insulted and harassed him over the news.
“No one likes being bullied or called names — but honestly, we’ve been through so much worse. Yelling disrespect will never affect our actions,” he wrote.

One of the things that Peter and I were aware of when we took over as heads of DC studios was a certain minority of people online who could be, to say the least, loud and unkind.
Our DCU picks are based on what we think is best for the story and what’s best for DC characters that have been around for nearly 85 years. Maybe these choices are great, maybe not, but they’re made with honest hearts and integrity and always with story in mind.
No one likes to be teased or called names – but honestly, we’ve been through a lot worse than that. A disrespectful cry will never affect our actions.

But that means little to us compared to our jobs as artists and custodians in helping to create a vast and wonderful future for the capital.
