Jon Stewart Mocks Fox News’ Coverage of the Democratic National Convention

Jon Stewart attacked Fox News’ coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, mocking the channel’s inconsistent handling of the convention’s joyful energy.

“What was your Fox News experience of this conference initially?” Stewart asked his audience at Daily Offer“This show was broadcast live from Chicago right after the Democratic National Convention. I have to be honest, I’m not sure they paid attention to it.”

The show then showed a montage of comments from Fox News pundits claiming that “there’s not a lot of joy in this convention hall,” saying that “the atmosphere is broken.” In one clip, Jesse Waters said, “This is probably the most boring scene I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”

“Oh, it’s so boring,” Stewart replied. “I forgot you were a hothead like me—I forgot that your life was an endless rollercoaster of talking to Brit Hume between catheter ads.”

The Democratic National Convention wrapped up in front of a raucous crowd on Thursday night, capping off four nights of joyous celebrations for the Harris-Walls ticket. Joy was a major theme throughout the week, with people from Michelle Obama to Oprah Winfrey thanking the Democratic nominee for the positive energy her campaign has brought.

Stewart continued to refer to Waters as “Jesse Knievel,” then proceeded to show more clips from Fox News that showed the network’s leaders changing their stance. In one clip, a commentator said, “People are having a great time here” immediately after Stevie Wonder’s performance.

But not everything changed. “They had a problem that night, too,” Stewart said, showing videos of Fox leaders saying, “All the joy, all the feelings, all the emotions, they’re just empty calories. They burn quickly and they make you fat.”

In another clip, one commenter said: “You wouldn’t eat good shakes, would you?”

Then Stewart looked at the crowd with mock disdain and said, “Which one is it? Were those vibrations making you gain weight, or were they emotional?”

“I think you’re right,” he continued. “You can’t feed your family with vibrations. You can only feed your family with immigration and fearmongering.”

At the end of the segment, Stewart turned to Waters, who maintained that the atmosphere at the Democratic National Convention was tense until the end of the event, saying at one point: “Last night wasn’t as joyous as the media tells you… The lines were long and silent to get into the stadium. The only joy in the building was Joy Reid.”

As he spoke, Fox News showed footage from the conference where viewers could see that the event was crowded, noisy and filled with smiling fans.

Stewart said Waters “bravely continued to pretend the conference was going badly even as the footage was right next to his damn head.”
