The Made by Google leaks continue today as someone tries out the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL.
2 videos shared by “PixophoneOn TikTok (via Way Tech B). This is a device that was released some time before its launch as evidenced by the inscriptions on the back panel that Google uses to identify prototype units, although this is a final device due to the presence of the “G” logo. A sticker/tag has been attached to cover the pattern.
The comparison shows how the smaller Pixel 9 has a glossy back panel, while the 9 Pro XL opts for a matte finish that’s less prone to fingerprints. However, the flat side rails are reversed between the two models. As a result, the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a somewhat glossy surround. The difference is quite noticeable and quite unfortunate.
Regulatory markings on these units appear on the left edge near the bottom. Pixel phones in the US have ditched these markings for several generations now (except for the Pixel Fold). It’s unclear if this is just a design on the prototype units given the itchy back, or if this is the final international shape.
There’s obviously a size difference between the (expected) 6.24-inch display on the Pixel 9 and the 9 Pro XL’s 6.73-inch display, but it’s not a huge difference. (The Pixel 9 Pro is rumored to come with a 6.34-inch display.)
A second video compares the Pixel 9 Pro XL to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which has a 6.8-inch display. The footage gives a good look at how thick the camera bar is.
