Lupita Nyong’o brought her bold and unconventional sense of style to Sunday night’s Tony Awards, showing up at the New York gala in an look she described as “sassy.”
The “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” actor walked the red carpet outside Manhattan’s United Palace Theater in a tuxedo and black slacks. Underneath her jacket, however, she eschewed a traditional blouse in favor of a metal armour.
The details of the bodice were strikingly realistic, and for good reason: a Pakistani artist and designer Misha Japanwala Created by being formed from Nyong’o’s own body.
on instagramIn Exclaim!, Nyong’o said she felt “pride, humility, strength and vitality” to wear the piece, noting that Japanwala’s work was “rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of the external shame attached to one’s own body”.
“In her artistic process, she creates a realistic, authentic record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, insisting that it be allowed to exist freely in our bodies,” I wrote.
She went on to thank Japanwala for “this special opportunity to be right here, in this body now,” calling it “an edgeless out-of-body experience.”
An Academy Award winner for 2013’s “12 Years a Slave,” Nyong’o is no stranger to the New York stage. In 2016, she received a Tony nomination for her portrayal of a Liberian orphan in the movie “eclipse,” any History presented as the first Broadway play to feature an ensemble cast and cast of black women.
She is set to return to the big screen next year in the horror flick “A Quiet Place: Day Oneco-starring Dennis O’Hare and Joseph Quinn.
