Mario Kart 7 is getting its first update in over a decade, and here’s what’s included

In surprising news, an excellent 3DS title Mario Kart 7 Updated today for the second time ever. Yes, even though it was released in 2011, Nintendo randomly released a new patch for the game that brought it all the way to version 1.2.

According to the official patch notes, several issues have been addressed to improve the overall experience. This comes after a previous update (v1.1) in May 2012. Here’s the full patch notes history for this game, featuring updates ten years apart:

Version 1.1 (Released May 15, 2012)

  • An update is provided to eliminate shortcut exploits in a Woohoo LubeAnd the Maca WuhuAnd the Boozer Castle 1 Tracks when it is played in online multiplayer mode.
  • The update is required to run the game’s online multiplayer modes. However, tracks in single player mode and local multiplayer mode will not be affected by this update. Players can continue to play in these modes without installing the update.

In typical fashion, Nintendo doesn’t actually reveal what’s going on behind the scenes with this update, but it could easily have something to do with online services or the closing of the 3DS eShop – with the closing on March 27, 2023. Dataminer OatmealDome has suggested that this patch may fix some security vulnerabilities. :
