Celebrities flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday night for the annual Met Gala. This extravagant event raises money for the museum’s Costume Institute. Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth were co-chairs along with Anna Wintour.
This year’s dress code was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J. J. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. The A-list stars came dressed in plenty of floral and floral motifs, as well as creative styles that addressed decadence and ruin.
Designer Harris Reid walked Demi Moore down the carpet, revealing that her gown took 11,000 hours of silk embroidery and was made from vintage wallpaper. “This Victorian idea of it blooming on the carpet and covered in these thorns…this gorgeous flower at the perfect moment of bloom.”
Meanwhile, Lana Del Rey’s custom Alexander McQueen dress evoked a garden overgrowth, hand-embroidered with bronze-hued, spiky branches—inspired by artist Alberto Giacometti’s sculptures—creeping their way to form a tulle headpiece coiled like spiderwebs.
The sleeves of Elle Fanning’s sheer Balmain dress appear to have been painted by birds, and are made of resin for a glass-like effect. Janelle Monáe’s sequin dress and Greta Lee’s sheer lace dress also referenced the delicate nature of the flowers in the story.
Among the men opting for the evening’s more daring shots were model Wisdom Kay, whose head-to-toe red floral ensemble looked smoldering along the edges, and Bad Bunny in a custom Maison Margiela outfit and dramatic hat. Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum looked part of the story, adding a touch of Oz (he’ll star in “Wicked” later this year) by wearing dark green sunglasses.
