Mike Lynch’s Yacht Sinks Live: Fifth Body Found Inside Sunken Bay Boat Off Sicily

The moment the storm hit the Bayesian yacht

Five bodies have been found inside the sunken Bayesian yacht as the search continues for the last missing passenger.

The ship sank in a severe storm in the early hours of Monday morning, and among those missing were British billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Plummer and his wife Judy Plummer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nida Morvillo.

Earlier on Wednesday, the bodies of four people, including a “huge” man, were recovered. The head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvatore Cosina, said efforts to bring a fifth person to shore were “ongoing”, while the whereabouts of the sixth missing person remained unknown.

The authorities have not confirmed the identities of the recovered bodies, although local and international media reported that some of them had been identified.

Firefighters described the operation as “complicated”, with divers limited to 12 minutes underwater and debris hampering efforts to reach the cabins.

One man, the boat’s chief cook Ricaldo Tomas, was confirmed dead on Monday, while 15 others survived the disaster.

Why did the luxury yacht Bayzian sink?

Leaving doors and hatches open all night on the luxury yacht “Baizian” may have caused it to sink in Italy, a sailing expert has said.

Sam Jefferson, editor of Sailing Today magazine, believes the ship’s massive mast also likely contributed to the fatal accident.

It is believed that the ship was hit by a storm over the water, known as a whirlpool.

Weather records show that temperatures reached about 33 degrees Celsius the day before the sinking, which may have led to the ship’s passengers wanting airflow while they slept.

“I would say the boat was hit hard by the wind and flipped on its side,” Jefferson told the Palestinian news agency.

“The reason the mast flipped so hard was because it was so big. It was acting almost like a sail. (It) pushed the boat hard on its side. (The boat) filled with water before it could get back into position.

“This is all just speculation, but it’s the only logical explanation.”

Mr Jefferson added that such incidents were “extremely rare”, describing the chances of a yacht hitting a waterspout as “slim”.

The yacht’s aluminium mast measures 72 metres in length, making it one of the largest sailing yachts in the world.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht that was near the Bayzian, told Reuters news agency that he saw the ship “settle on the water and then sink”.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One expert says Bayesia was the victim of a ‘high-impact’ weather-related incident.

The Bayesian vessel was the victim of a “high-impact” weather-related incident, said Matthew Shank, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, a UK-based non-profit that trains marine rescuers.

“If it was a water fountain, which it appears to be, I would consider it a rare and unexpected event,” he told Reuters.

Yacht captain who helped rescue 15 survivors of Bayesian disaster tells of ordeal

The captain of the yacht who helped rescue 15 people from the stricken Baysman has described how his crew detected the distress signal sent from the lifeboat.

Carsten Borner said his ship, the Sir Robert BB, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Baysian when it was hit by “severe” weather.

Mr Borner said they sent their boat which found the lifeboat and returned the passengers to the yacht.

He said Sky News“We couldn’t see them anymore and they disappeared from the radar, we were busy keeping our ship sailing. We couldn’t see the ship again, so we realized something was seriously wrong.”

He said the lifeboat was not found until the boat set off.

“It turned out to be a lifeboat, a boat for 12 people, and there were 15 people in it, including a baby. They got on our boat and we took them back to our ship. There we took good care of them, gave them dry clothes, towels, blankets, tea, coffee, etc., and looked after them,” he said.

Mr Borner said he helped the Coast Guard launch a search and rescue mission for the remaining passengers on the Bayezid.

He added that the captain of the Bayezid yacht told him that the yacht sank in two minutes, but then he watched a video clip showing it sinking in 60 seconds.

“The engineer and the captain did not provide any explanation as to why the ship sank so quickly. My personal opinion is that the ship should not have capsized in this way, it defies all logic,” he said.

He also questioned the safety of the 75-metre mast, adding: “I think it is not safe to build masts.”

Describing the force of the storm and the waves that hit his yacht and the Baysian, he said: “They were very close and we were hit very hard and very strong, and they had the same effect. It was very strong.”
