What is water column?
Social media users posted a video of waterspouts off the coast of Italy on the same day that Bayesian The ship sank in the days leading up to the tragic accident. A video posted online on Monday also showed the luxury yacht sinking in stormy conditions.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is about 3 degrees above normal. This creates a huge source of energy that contributes to these storms,” said climate scientist Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society.
“So we can’t say it’s all due to climate change, but we can say it has an amplifying effect,” he added.
A waterspout or water explosion, a more common phenomenon that does not involve air circulation, may have caused the yacht to sink, Mercalli said.
A waterspout is a column of air and water mist, and there are two types of waterspout – tornado and cyclone. A waterspout is a tornado that can form over water, or start on land and then move over water. It has the same characteristics as a land tornado – with a rope-like structure as well – and can be just as destructive.

Obtaining witness testimony is essential, says marine investigator
Obtaining witness statements as quickly as possible will be crucial for authorities, a marine investigator said.
James Wilkes said investigators will want to talk to survivors or those who witnessed the sinking “while the memories are still fresh in their minds.”
“A lot of other information can be collected a little bit more slowly,” he told Sky News.
“Fortunately, 15 people survived. I would like to explore the circumstances in which they were able to survive the storm and the sinking, look at the anomalies and see the difference between those and the people who unfortunately did not survive and combine all that with technical data and simulations,” he said.
