The Nebraska volleyball team (1-0) opened the season with a four-set win over No. 9 Kentucky (0-1) on Tuesday, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25. The No. 2 Huskers are now 12-2 all-time against the Wildcats and have won their last 11 meetings.
Defense was the name of the game for the Big Red during Game 1 of the AVCA First Serve Showcase in Louisville. NU recorded 18 blocks, led by 12 from Rebekah Allick. In addition to the tremendous defense, Lexi Rodriguez recorded 15 digs, a team-high, while Bergen Reilly added 11.
Riley had a double-double, collecting 39 assists in addition to her double-digit digs.
Offensively, Nebraska posted a .258 batting average for the game. The Huskers had a poor second set, hitting just .054, but they hit at least .333 in the other three sets.
The Wildcats averaged .139 in the game, including .257 in their only series win.
The offense was balanced, with Alec and Merritt Beason each scoring 11 points, a team-high. Andy Jackson was second with 10, followed by Harper Murray with eight and Lindsey Krause with seven.
Nebraska returns to Lincoln for two games this week: Friday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Saturday against TCU.
