Officials announced that the Braintree branch will be closed from September 6 to 29.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced Thursday that train service on the Braintree Branch of the Red Line will be suspended for 24 days in September.

Officials with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the closure, which runs from Sept. 6 to Sept. 29, will allow crews to repair 18 miles of track on the line serving North Quincy, Wollaston, Quincy Center, Quincy Adams and Braintree.

Shuttle bus plans will be announced soon, The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said:.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the fixes would lift more than 20 speed restrictions. Philip Eng, general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, estimated that the round-trip trip between Braintree and JFK/U Massachusetts stations would be 24 to 27 minutes faster.

“The work to be done at the Braintree branch in September is unprecedented but has been long needed,” Eng said in a statement.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will increase service on the Ashmont Branch of the Red Line during the closure and encourage riders to use commuter trains. Information on bus stops and frequencies will be available soon at mbta.com/redlineOfficials said.

Red Line train service between JFK/UMAS and Kendall/MIT will also be suspended from August 19 to 25. During that time, free shuttle buses will stop between JFK/UMass and Kendall/MIT airports, excluding Park Street and Downtown Crossing.
