Paris 2024 Olympics: Simone Biles’ injury won’t stop Team USA from leading gymnastics qualifiers

Medal table | olympic table | Olympics news

The Paris 2024 Olympics are underway, and the U.S. women’s gymnastics team began its qualifying campaign at Bercy Arena on Sunday. Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Hazel Rivera will be looking to return to form in Paris after winning the team silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The quintet got off to a good start, but it wasn’t without its setbacks. The most notable was Biles injuring her lower left leg while warming up before her floor exercise during Team USA’s second session.

Biles was heard saying that pushing hurt and left the gymnastics ring at one point, but remained in the competition despite having her ankle taped. She made a huge mistake on her floor routine and needed a big step back to execute her signature Yurchenko on the vault, but she was eliminated from the heats by a large margin in the overall standings.

Meanwhile, Lee narrowly beat Chiles to take second place in the individual all-around final, and will have a chance to defend her gold medal in Tokyo. The worst day came for Carey, who fell badly during floor exercise and will not have a chance to defend her gold medal in that discipline.

The Americans were in Group B of the day. Here’s a look at the full gymnastics schedule:

    3. China (166,628)
    4. Japan (162,196)

    8. Netherlands (159,096)
    9. France (158,797)
    10. South Korea (152,496)

  • USA holds big lead after two divisions

Team USA’s qualifying form was not clean, with Simone Biles injured and Judd Carey falling, but they have a big lead of 172.296 points in the team standings after two subdivisions. China is currently second with 166.861 points.

Meanwhile, the top of the overall individual rankings:

    1. Simone Biles, 59.566
    2. Sunisa Lee, 56,132
    3. Jordan Chiles, 56.065 (out)
    4. Algerian Kaylia Nemour, 55.966

There are three more subsections left. We will come back to check them once the field is fully filled.

  • Sonny Lee Defeats Jordan Chiles in All-Around Final

Being a Team USA gymnast means you may be the third-best gymnast in the world, but your teammates will see you through. Sunny Lee beat Chiles with a 14.866 on the bars and will get a chance to defend her gold medal.

Meanwhile, Simone Biles untapes her ankle after a hard day’s work.

  • Simone Biles finishes thrilling qualifying round with a bang

The beam competition may have been Biles’ worst, but she looked great there, landing a tough landing and earning a score of 14.433. She was all smiles as she landed on the mat… and then went the wrong way. She’s expected to hold a big lead in the all-around when all competitions are over.

Now, Sony Lee, is competing for her place in all fields.

  • Here’s Biles’ first jump, via Lindsey Vonn

  • Jordan Chiles puts on a strong showing in all areas with a 14.266 on beam.

Sunny Lee will need to deliver a perfect performance here to have a chance of defending her gold medal in Tokyo.

  • Heazley Rivera starts for Team USA on uneven bars

The 16-year-old rookie started Team USA off strong with a 13.900. CUTE: NBC showed off her father Henry’s heart rate monitor, which clocked in at about 180 beats per minute.

  • Biggest Drama Remaining: The Battle for Second Place at the U.S. All-Around Championships

Only two players from each country are allowed to advance to the individual all-around finals. Biles is sure to take the U.S. No. 1 spot. Second place will be between Jordan Chiles and Sunny Lee.

Chiles is 41.799th while Lee is 41.266th, but Lee may hold the advantage on beam, where she won bronze in Tokyo.

  • Biles lands her second vault, then leaps off the stage on one foot.

Biles is clearly in some pain. She jumped onto the stage with one foot and appeared to limp across the mat, but the jumps are all that matter. She earned 14.800 points, for a total score of 15.300, and is now in good shape heading into Team USA’s final event, the uneven bars.

  • Biles scores 15.800 on her first vault

Almost 2 points higher than any other jump. This. Will. Play.

  • Simones Biles hits Yurchenko double throw

NBC’s Laurie Hernandez: ‘I feel like I’m going to throw up’

Biles: Performs the most difficult trick in gymnastics with a taped ankle, with a big step backwards.

    Hernandez: “Yay.”

  • Jade Carey recovers from floor disaster with stunning doubles, Simone Biles next

Carrie shakes off a bad fall on floor by scoring 14.433 on vault. She’ll reach the finals with a huge score, and her mother cries in the crowd.

    Next: Simone Biles.

  • Sonny Lee and Jordan Chiles hold their ground on the vault.

Lee got 14.133 points while Chili’s got 14.21 points. Both had great results. Next up is Jade Carey.

  • Here’s part of Biles’ floor routine, which ignores her opening false step.

  • Team USA on the jump now

With the ankle injury, it’s now time for Biles’ signature event: the jump. She’ll be jumping twice, so we’ll see if the injury affects her.

  • Biles looks fine.

Aside from putting her left foot out of the court on her first fall, Biles put on a great performance. Either the ankle injury was the cause of much controversy, or we saw some incredible bravery. “I was looking at this exercise like, ‘What the hell is this?’” she could be heard saying.

She got 14.600, which was again the best of the day, and everything is fine now except for Carey not being able to defend her gold medal.

  • Simone Biles competing on the court now

After a bad injury to her left ankle, Simone Biles enters the ring. Carey earned 10.633 points.

  • Jade Carey takes a hard tumble to the floor, Biles resurfaces.

Jade Carey is a star on Team USA, but she had a very poor showing after falling badly, at a time when the mood was starting to change due to uncertainty about Biles. Carey is now unlikely to make it to the floor finals, while Biles is back in the wrestling ring.

  • Simone Biles left the ring

Potential big development. Biles will leave the ring with a possible left leg injury, while floor gold medalist Jade Carey will take to the mat. Biles is scheduled to compete next.

  • Trainers are now working on Biles’ left ankle.

Biles can be heard telling trainers that she feels a lot of pain when she pushes her left ankle. They are now covering her ankle with tape.

Sunny Lee scores 13.100 on floor, then Jordan Chiles. There’s only one gymnast left before Biles takes the floor.
